Chessgi: It is wellknown in Denmark in a special version used very much for fun. Four players play two 5-minutes games next to each other (see enclosed drawing). If white captures a piece, he gives it to his companion playing black and sitting next to him. By time forfeit the team loses, but if one is mate (and so his time runs), his companion can draw the match by mating - but his opponent will stop playing if he has more time than his mated opponent! I played it a lot ca. 1973. A special rule: We didn't allow a pawn to be inserted on the first rank. After a pause for 17 years I have just played the 'double-blitz game' where you insert pieces. A new rule has been introduced since I played it first: An inserted piece must not be inserted as a matemove. There are both good and bad sides of this rule like the discussion of Scottisch versus Italian in progressive chess. 03. THE EXTRA KNIGHT. Each player has an extra knight he can set in during the game instead of making a move. I assume this little rule changes the play quite a lot!? 06. BISHOP TO THE BACK ROW. The bishops cannot capture and cannot be captured. Promotion to a bishop is not allowed. The king is an ordinary piece. You win when you get a bishop to the back row. 07. CHECK. Besides mate, giving 3 checks wins (evt. only one check). 14. DOUBLEMOVECHESS. Both player makes 2 moves each time (white evt. starts with only one move). 16. DOUBLEKNIGHT/TWICEKNIGHT/TWIKNIGHT. Each player is allowed one doublemove with a knight in a game. I have invented this rule. 17. BOUNCECHESS. Q&B bounces at the edge. 18. SELFMATECHESS. This popular problem is difficult to turn into a game.... 19. CHESS LIKE DRAUGHTS. You capture a piece by jumping over it and place your piece on an empty square just behind the captured piece. N moves normally. Eks.: Kh6,Df1,Sg2/Kh8,Df7. 1.Dxf8,Kg7 2.Sh4,Kh8 3.Kg6,Kh7+ 4.Sf5,Kh8 5.Da8,Kh7 6.Dh8++. 22. SUPERCHESS. Pieces (not pawns) standing on a R-, N- or B-file, moves like a R, N or B respectively. Pieces move normally on the Q- and K-file. I discovered this version in my local chessclub where some children were playing it. 24. GRADUALLY PROMOTION. A pawn on the 5., 6., 7. og 8.th row moves like a N, B, R and Q respectively. 25. DIAGONALCHESS. Move the board 45 degrees, so white has a1 and black has h8 against him. Startposition: Ka1, Db2, La2, La3, Sb1, Sc1, Ta4, Td1 and pawns on b3,c2,a5,b4,c3,d2,e1. Similar for black. Pawns moves along the edge and promotes on a1/h8. They capture in the direction a1-h8. They have no doublemove or e.p. Castling does not exist. 28. DICECHESS. Use a dice to determine which kind of piece you must move. I have 2 set of rules. 30. DARKNESSCHESS. Me and a friend of mine (Torben Osted, who came with the best ideas for this variant) are playing a correspondance game of chess with changed rules. It is inspired by the version 'Are there any?', and like that version the goal of the game is to come as close as possible to a real war. To do this the most important is that you do not exactly know where the opponents pieces are! To run the game we use a third part - it is my wife, but the task could be done by a computerprogram with passwords for black and white. The rules are easy if you imagine, that a piece is able to 'see' the squares it threats and can go to. If you open e2-e4 you are told what the pawn can see on d5,e5,f5, and what the bishop and queen can see on their opened lines. For each single move both black and white are told what they can see. We have discarded the en-passant move, as it is difficult to handle and does not influence the game anyhow. If you have an uncovered piece which becomes captured, you are only told that it has disappeared! The goal is not to mate the opponents king, but to capture him! This means you are not told if your king is in check or you put him into check yourself! During castling the king is allowed to jump over an attacked square. The game is not so serious as normal chess, but quite amusing and exciting! (A later note: perhaps it is better to play without the pawns double move. They can see too much, and you avoids the en passant move at the same time.). The only game we ever played has now been published in ETEROSCHACCO. 41. TRANSPORTER. Torben Osted has invented a game with a new piece which he calls a transporter. Both players has such a piece which is flat and is under the kings in the startposition. It also moves like a king. When two pieces are on the same square, moving one of the pieces can take the other along. You can also decide to move one of the pieces without the other. The transporter can free blocked pieces, make a bishop change squarecolour etc. It can capture pieces and can be captured (evt. together with another piece on the same square), but it cannot be promoted. 64. COIN-CHESS. After each move you move a coin to an empty square, and the opponent is not allowed to place a piece on that square in his next move. 65. BOMB-CHESS. When a piece is captured, all the pieces next to it (a kingmove away) are also removed. The goal is to capture the king. This rule enables you to place pieces deep into the opponents position. Finally I have invented a game using the maximum-rule used in many problems: Each player make 2 moves in his turn, and at least one of them must be a maximummove!
